What to Expect from Concrete

Concrete is a very porous material and it will absorb moisture from all around. B&W Concrete Services does everything it can to leave you with the highest quality finished product possible.

Cracks

Cracks in concrete walls and slabs are a common occurrence.  Cracks in concrete are not indicative of inferior materials or workmanship.  There are several types of cracks which can occurs

As the moisture freezes it expands. Every time there is a thawing cycle, the surface becomes more saturated with this moisture. After several freeze/thaw cycles the saturated surface can no longer restrain the expansion of the moisture as it freezes and expands from within; this tremendous expanding force can cause cracks and the surface to "pop" loose. This phenomenon is also known as "scaling."

Cracks in concrete walls and slabs are a common occurrence. Cracks in concrete are not indicative of inferior materials or workmanship. They are a result of shrinkage that occurs when concrete hardens and cures. Cracks can be minimized and controlled, but not eliminated. They can be significantly reduced when the causes are taken into account and preventative steps taken.

Preventing Scaling

Scaling is a common surface defect common with concrete. It is defined as the loss of surface due to harsh weather and chemicals. At B&W Concrete Services, we take steps to ensure the quality of the ready mixed concrete we use to combat scaling before it starts. We incorporate proper placement and finishing techniques in working with it. We use concrete mixes for interior and exterior flatwork that meet or exceed industry standards for compressive strength (4,000 psi) and air entrainment.
